Not a bad angle of the TrailBlazer. I’ll miss it.
Last night, I published some
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
about me crashing my beloved, yet also hated, 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer into the back of my school librarian’s 2012 Toyota Camry. Thankfully, everybody involved walked away with no injury, but the TrailBlazer did face an untimely death. So, what’s next?
Before I proceed, there is nothing set in stone about what I may be driving next. I have my hopes, thankfully my mother agrees with most of them, and at this point we’re just waiting to get a check from the insurance company. We will fight to be fairly compensated, as that money will be going into the next vehicle.
What’s Going to Happen
I’m not entirely sure. I do know that we will be picking the replacement for the TrailBlazer within the next week, possibly two. Right now, we’re mostly looking at Volvo V70's and S60's. My mother really likes a Lexus SC300 that is for sale locally, as well. I am hoping for an E46 BMW 325i, but all the local clean examples with manual transmissions are out of our budget at the moment.
Regarding the Volvo’s, we are focusing heavily on a 2001 V70 T5 with 143,000 miles, that has dealer records since it was new. In 2004, this wagon was considered Volvo Certified, so we know that it is, or at one point was, in good shape. The car is located about an hour and a half away in Greensboro, NC, and we are making a trek out on Saturday to go and see it. Whilst in Greensboro, we are going to check out a 2003 Volvo S60 2.4T with 168,000 miles. It is not as clean as the aforementioned V70, but it is much cheaper. Right now, money is everything. There is also a super clean 1989 Mercedes 300TE for sale, but I’m not sure that we will have time to look at it.
And I want Oppo to help! Now, there are a few requirements that I must set forth before y’all go crazy (I love it, by the way), in the comments below:
1. Has to be under $4,000.
2. Will probably have to be located within a 1.5 hour radius of Raleigh, NC. Exceptions can be made, but that can only be reserved for the Super Cool Stuff.
3. My mother wants me to keep this vehicle through college. Now, I doubt that will happen considering my short attention span, but still.
4. Reliability is important. Well, it can’t be too important considering I’m looking at older Volvo’s. Nonetheless, reliability is important. Sadly.
5. ?????
6. Profit
Yeah, that is pretty much it. Transmission doesn’t really matter, age of vehicle kinda matters, gas mileage matters, and something that will be relatively inexpensive to insure would be preferred.
Thanks for all the help, and I’m looking forward to all the suggestions.

Also you will get 30mpg no matter how hard you hoon and insurance isn’t too bad due to it being a base model hatchback. Don’t buy an auto because the CVT is shit and will fail. Also buying a Mini with an auto should be a sin.

Yes, my mother is really liking a base 2005 Mini Cooper that is for sale locally for $3,500. It has 168,000 miles and a manual. That 30 MPG figure is enticing as my TrailBlazer gets 17.

Briefly. A friend of mine rolled hers over the summer and she made it out OK, so that has it’s upside. Downside, I hate the interior styling. My neighbor had a 2006 for years and I just hattteeeddd it. He did average 24 MPG, though.

Very true. A friend in Arizona has said that he will sell his 2006 hatch with 103,000 on it to us for $3,500 including shipping. We know that it’s been well maintained as he is super OCD about his cars, and is very much a car guy as well. Like, he was a lightly modified 2011 WRX and a AW11 MR2 with a 3S-GTE pushing 300 WHP. The guy is a madman.

Because it’s a 560, it doesn’t suffer from the timing chain stretching issues of the 380 in the SL and SEL. They had all the little things (mostly climate control) sorted by the 560, and it’s the last real hewn-from-granite Mercedes, so it will be as reliable as gravity for years to come. It’s a rather desirable colour scheme, and is priced extremely fairly given market value.

Just check for any oil leaking/seeping from any of the seals, check that the thermostat isn’t leaking, and that the coolant expansion tank isn’t leaking. None of those are massively expensive fixes on their own but it’s good to get a solid car. Not an issue with the 2005 and later since they have a getrag gearbox but if you look at 2004s and older with the Midlands check that it isn’t leaking any trans fluid. The seals like to go and when it runs out of fluid it eats gears.
Make sure the front strut towers are still flat. They like to “mushroom” or warp when you hit lots of bumps. Make sure that the center isn’t pushed up and that the bolts are still parallel. A $150 set of reinforcement plates will prevent it into the future but it costs thousands to fix.
Other than that they sound great with an intake. I have a cheapo one and it makes wonderful grumbly noises.

Yup. $4k CAD ($2986 USD at time of posting). It’s got every option save for three. Navigation, rear seat entertainment, and the big wheels (tasteful chrome six spokes will do). Most importantly, everything on it works, from the tri zone automatic climate control to the heated second row captain’s chairs. The extra length of the XL model really pays off in terms of cargo space.

Focus hatchback (bonus for the 2.3 duratec)
Mazda 3 hatchback
Impreza hatchback (or maybe even a forester)
Saab 9-3 (I think the 2005-06 had GM engines and proved pretty reliable, look great and being orphaned drove the price down)
I think to keep your interest a little longer you may want to consider:
1. Getting a manual
2. A car with a good aftermarket (all of the above do in their own way)
3. A car with some flexibility (that’s why 3 of the above are hatchbacks)
I think an Impreza hatch with the 2.5 is a great all aroundeR.

Yeah, I don’t quite understand how Raleigh Imports makes money considering most of what they sell is incredibly low mileage compared to the rest of the market, immaculately clean, and priced I would say a good $1,500 below what I would feel was fair market value.
Maybe they’re just that good.
You made a trip up to Durham Auto Mart to look around? They usually have their under $5,000 lot filled with pretty reasonable Cadillacs and Lincolns. And a Range Rover 4.6 with nearly 200k on the clock.

I’d go for something a little practical. That SC300 is a great car, very reliable, but not even the slightest bit practical. As a fellow teenager, who also makes very little money, get something reliable. And more importantly, get something that doesn’t cost a fortune to fix. And do your research too. You may think Lexus’ would be expensive to fix. Not so, the timing belt replacement in mine cost $300 less than that of a Camry V6.

My mother is advocating for the SC300, which really surprises me. I’ve been looking at a few LS400's, because I’m just here for the 1-UZ my guy. That first GS seems a lil rough. A friends dad owns a blue 2005 X3 with a manual and if that isn’t the most jerky manual I’ve come across, I don’t know what is. Both E39's looks pretty good. And, not to kill all the fun, I don’t want a Jag for, ya know, Jag reasons.

I could buy a base Fiesta for the same price. Or I could do what aperson did, and buy a parts car for $500.

Sooo I know you already bought a car, but I like cars, live in NC, and have too much time on my hands and a computer, so I’m going to spam you anyway:

OK I want all of those. Especially that Tempest for some reason even though I’m like 87% sure it’s horrible. That TR6 doesn’t look too terrible, nor does the Amazon. I looked at that red E30, too. My overall pick is probably the Grand Fury.

Outside of the ones you mentioned, I’m digging the Monza. The Triumph and Volvo are amazingly terrible, and the Plymouth actually looks to be a nice buy.
